Section V: Project Exit Strategy: Sustainability

18. PNGO Sustainability

Strategies were adopted through the project to nurture sustainability as a GRO:
  • Skills building and internalization of gender equality strengthened the organization to be viable and focused.
  • Empowerment of women in the PNGOs fuelled their commitment to work as GROs.
  • Sustainability spiral and action learning tools provided skills to be a learning organization.
  • Demand from community groups to end gender discrimination and improve their lives sustains PNGOs.
  • PNGOs as suppliers of gender expertise / services: Demand created for gender awareness training and gender analysis came from many other NGOs and local groups due to PIFs, CBI Fund, gender allies, DDC/NGO committee and GEC; street drama's, International Women's' day events, public awareness events and campaigns.
  • Skills and knowledge to be able to access resource providers.
  • Sensitized local government to support women's empowerment and gender equality through DPP and GEC, allies, PNGO advocacy.
  • Linkages built for sustainability - PNGOs with communities, NGOs, Line Agencies and local government; linkages with national level stakeholders.
  • Marketing of PNGOs expertise in district - CNGO newsletter, district publicity, PNGO brochures.
  • CNGO curriculum and other materials used to promote NGO capacity building and gender equality.
  • Phase-out period extended over one year, enabling PNGOs time to function as a GRO, with CNGO coaching support
  • CNGO promoted the PNGOs as GROs among central level stakeholders with a one day seminar, and PNGOs presented on gender issues from their district work in order to demonstrate their capacity. PNGOs then met with a selected number of potential donors to introduce themselves and discover mutual interests for collaboration.
  • A booklet marketing each PNGO's skills and experience distributed at national and district level.
  • PNGOs formed an informal network among themselves and SBAN to continue to support each other and collaborate on gender advocacy.
